During a press conference that took place in October of 2022, the first-time filmmaker offered some insight into the creative process behind the next film. Following the rediscovery of a diary that Woo-ri used to keep when she was younger, the thought occurred to her. It was disclosed by Woo-ri that when she was a student, she kept a diary and gave it to a close friend of hers to read. They would take it in turns penning their thoughts in the diary and trading them with one another as they went. The filmmaker disclosed that the idea of “exchange journals” was very well-liked among schoolchildren in the late 1990s.
Woo-ri said that her buddy had an encounter with her first love, and the two of them discussed the occurrence, which led to the director reviewing their journal entry once more. As a result, the event served as the inspiration for the premise of the movie. However, the plot and characters in the film are all made up and are in no way based on the actual persons who inspired Woo-ri to make the movie in the first place. They saw Furuta riding her bike home at 8:30 o’clock in the evening after she had finished working a shift at her workplace. Following Miyano’s orders, Minato knocked Furuta off of her bike and then ran away from the scene. Miyano approached Furuta and made the offer to escort her home in safety while maintaining the pretence that she had accidentally witnessed the attack.
After he had gained her trust, he raped her at the warehouse, and then he did it again in a hotel close by, while threatening to murder her.
Miyano called Minato and two of his other pals, Yasushi Watanabe and J Ogura, from the hotel where he was staying and boasted to them about having committed the rape. It is said that Ogura approached Miyano and requested that she continue to hold her captive so that a large number of people could sexually assault her.
The group had a history of committing gang rapes, and they had just recently kidnapped and sexually assaulted another girl, whom they had then set free after the incident.
At approximately three in the morning, Miyano led Furuta to a neighbouring park where Minato, Ogura, and Watanabe were already waiting. They informed her that they knew where she lived, that Yakuza members would kill her family if she attempted to flee, and that they had found her home address written down in a notebook that was in her rucksack.
They were able to take control of her, took her to a residence in the Ayase neighbourhood of Adachi, and then gang-raped her there. The house, which was owned by Minato’s parents, was quickly turned into a regular hangout spot for the gang.
On November 27th, Furuta’s parents reported to the authorities that their daughter had gone missing. The kidnappers wanted to prevent more investigation, so they made her phone her mother three times and told her that she had run away but was safe and staying with some friends. This was done to dissuade further police involvement.
They were also able to coerce Furuta into ending the police inquiry. [this needs to be clarified] When Minato’s parents were in the room, Furuta felt compelled to play the role of his girlfriend.  When it became evident that Minato’s parents would not denounce them to the police, they abandoned this pretence and went about their business as normal. After the fact, Minato’s parents have stated that the reason they did not intervene was because they were scared of their own son as he became increasingly violent against them.
On the evening of November 28th, Miyano brought two additional lads over to the Minato house: Tetsuo Nakumara and Koichi Ihara, also known as E and F, respectively. They went up to the room on the second floor, where Junko was seated. She was wearing a T-shirt with long sleeves and a skirt that Miyano had taken from a clothing store a few days before.
They pretended to get high on cough syrup by drinking it, as if it were narcotics, but it was actually only cough medicine. Furuta screeched in terror as she attempted to flee and ran away. Ihara covered her face with a cushion while Miyano seized hold of her legs.
The scream was loud enough to rouse the parents, who then rushed to check on their daughter. When they asked Minato what was wrong, she told them it was nothing. After that, the group engaged in a gang rape of Furuta. During this time, she was unconcious and staring at the ceiling without blinking. She remained fixated on the ceiling the entire time.
For a period of forty days, the group kept Furuta as a captive in the Minato residence, where they subjected her to a pattern of sexual assault, physical abuse, and psychological torment.
They also invited other guys and teenage boys to their home and urged them to take turns raping her. Other men and youngsters were present. More than 100 adult men and juvenile boys committed more than 500 separate acts of sexual assault against Furuta. On one instance, she was raped by twelve guys in the span of a single day.
According to the claims made by the group, the four of them shaved her pubic hair, made her dance to music while naked and masturbate in front of them, and then abandoned her on the balcony in the middle of the night while she was wearing very little clothing. They forcibly fed her significant quantities of vodka, milk, and water, as well as placed things such as a burning match, a metal rod, and a bottle into her vagina and anus, respectively.
She was also made to inhale paint thinner while being forced to smoke many cigarettes at the same time. During one of the incidents, Miyano burned Furuta’s legs and arms multiple times with lighter fluid. After being given insufficient amounts of food and then milk as her primary source of nutrition, Furuta was extremely emaciated by the end of the month of December.
As a result of the serious injuries she sustained and the burns that became infected as a result of those injuries, she was unable to use the restroom in the basement and was forced to remain on the floor of Minato’s bedroom in a state of great helplessness.
