Bilawal Bhutto: Bio

The Pakistan Peoples Party is currently led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. After his mother, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, was killed on December 27, 2007, he took over as leader.

On September 21, 1988, three months before Benazir was chosen as Pakistan’s first female prime minister, Bilawal was born in Karachi.

He is the only son and oldest child of former Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Benazir Bhutto.

Since leaving Pakistan in 1999, when Benazir went into self-exile and the family split their time between London and Dubai, Bilawal has spent the majority of his life overseas.

He earned a black belt in taekwondo while attending the Rashid School for Boys in Dubai.

Following in the footsteps of his famous grandpa Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and mother, Bilawal Zardari enrolled at Christ Church at the prestigious University of Oxford in 2007 to study history and politics. Additionally, he joined the Oxford Union Debating Society, where he picked up skills that would be helpful in a political career.

But a few months later, his mother was murdered, and he was given control of the PPP. As co-chairman, Zardari assumed leadership of the party while Bilawal completed his studies.

Bilawal graduated from college in June 2010.

At the young age of 19, Bilawal took over the PPP’s leadership and began attending significant meetings with his father and other senior leaders.

On the fifth anniversary of Benazir’s passing, he made his official political debut in 2012 with a stirring speech.

Following the passing of his paternal grandfather Hakim Ali Zardari in May 2011, Bilawal was also appointed Tumandar (head) of the Zardari tribe.

Younger sisters Bakhtawar and Aseefa are his.

As the likely youngest party leader in Pakistan, Bilawal adds greater vigor to the group.

Bilawal’s upbringing in a political household provided the ideal environment for learning about the workings of Pakistani politics.

When he became leadership, Bilawal’s goal was to reorganize the political party in order to inject new blood, revive the PPP’s founding spirit, and mobilize party members to participate in the 2018 elections.

In 2016, Zardari declared that he and Bilawal would run for office jointly. Bilawal was seen to be too young and immature to run in the 2013 elections.

The results of the elections will demonstrate whether he can bring back the PPP’s former splendor.
