In 18 games during the playoffs that year, he nearly averaged a triple-double (32.3 points, 15.9 rebounds, and 8.2 assists), but the Pacers were unable to win the championship after falling to Kentucky in the ABA Finals.

76ers of Philadelphia (1975-1978)

McGinnis was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 22nd overall choice in the second round of the 1973 NBA draft, two years into his professional career. The 76ers were prepared to transfer the New York Knicks’ draft rights to McGinnis in October 1974, on the condition that the latter team sign him before the predetermined date.

The agreement was broken when he made the decision to remain with the Pacers and signed a two-year deal with a $85,000 buyout clause that was used after the 1974–75 season. On May 23, 1975, McGinnis requested a preliminary injunction and restraining order against the NBA, which would have allowed him to negotiate with any of the league’s 18 clubs. McGinnis preferred to play in New York due to its financial sponsorship prospects.

When he agreed to a six-year, $2.4 million contract with the Knicks on May 30, a week after filing a lawsuit challenging the league’s bylaws, the case was dismissed. On June 5, Larry O’Brien took his first official action as the NBA’s new commissioner. He disapproved the contract and mandated that the Knicks forfeit their first-round pick in the 1976 NBA Draft and pay the 76ers back for all associated costs. Five weeks later, on July 10, 1975, McGinnis agreed to a six-year, $3.2 million guaranteed, no-cut, no-trade, and no-option contract with the 76ers.

“When we arrived, my dad was being taken away by an ambulance. Man, there’s no way that guy can live, I overheard one man say. When we arrive to the hospital, a doctor announces, “I don’t think your dad is going to survive. The time frame won’t exceed a few minutes. It truly hit me at that point. He was young and powerful, barely 42 years old. Man, that was difficult.

McGinnis started playing for his mother Willie and sister Bonnie at that point. He would look after them using his skills.

McGinnis kept his promise. When McGinnis left Indiana following his sophomore season to turn pro, he bought his mother a house in Indianapolis, where she still resides today at the age of 89.
