Who Is Holly Cinnamon?

Shiv Roy is a bisexual actress. Cinnamon is most known for playing Julie Barnes in Season 5 Episode 5 of Marvel’s Daredevil. The actress also appeared in numerous independent films and an Off-Broadway production of Dear Jane.

By performing various yoga positions, the yoga instructor purges the toxins from her body and mind. The artist is a resident of New York City, in Canada.

Holly here. In addition to acting, singing, writing, directing, and coaching movements, I also teach yoga and the Alexander Technique. I am a Canadian cis queer femme lesbian who grew up in a little village outside of Edmonton (Amiskwaciwâskahikan), but I now call Toronto (Tkaronto) and New York City (Lenapehoking) home. Ever since I was 13 and fell in love with Barbra Streisand, I have always wanted to live there. I identify as a gender-fluid cis woman who often presents as femme of center and utilize both she and them pronouns.

My forefathers are white and European; they are Irish, Danish, and Norwegian. Today, thankfully replacing type, identity is becoming more and more important to our job as performers and artists. Being aware of my whiteness, cisness, and queerness but also being visible in those identities is vital to me rather than just disregarding them. As an actor, I take pleasure in portraying many cis white women from various origins, sexual orientations, and worldviews. But I’m also really concerned about the visibility of femme lesbians and portraying my own identity in a complex, authentic way. In my little midwestern town, there were societal assumptions about lesbians that I didn’t fit into growing up.

I also didn’t have access to any out queer people that I knew of, which dragged down my process of coming out as queer. I’m very happy that representation and authenticity are starting to be prioritized throughout the casting process, and that a range of identities are beginning to be displayed and normalized in mainstream media. I’m glad to be out and in the open, and I’m open to discussions regarding my identity, my audience, my boundaries, and the current topics I’m most enthusiastic about sharing.

I am a learner, traveler, and listener at my core. I enjoy slowing down, talking to new people, and observing people. I have a good command of Spanish and Italian and spoke excellent French as a child. I enjoy picking up new dialects since they help me to better understand expression and tone. I’ve had the good fortune to see 23 nations on 4 continents. As an actor and creative, this has broadened my perspective, and realizing that I am only a small piece of a much larger whole gives me a sense of purpose in what I do. I am continually interested in studying and rediscovering my relationship to my body, how I map it, and how I experience it.

I am a woman and an embodiment educator who has studied yoga, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, Viewpoints, and more. The main source of my interest and acting decisions is my body. As a queer femme woman of the twenty-first century with a personal history, trauma, numerous entangled identities, and a rejection to limiting categories, I want to bring my entire self to my work. My teaching and acting methodologies are centered on body sovereignty, feminist emancipation, and queer visibility.

Aster, a hoarder and conspiracy theorist who lives alone on a rural farm and studies alien patterns; Marie, a teen who is bullied and assaulted at school and rediscovers her power through her relationship to a train; and Molly, an Irish immigrant who comes to America in search of a better life but struggles to find work and survive in New York City, are a few roles I have loved.

Due in part to queer preconceptions, I have yet to be cast as a queer woman, but you can be the first to do so! Sally Ride, Billy Jean King, Brene Brown, Mary Louise Parker, Greta Thunberg, Viola Davis, Natalie Barney, Billie Holiday, and of course Barbra Streisand are a few women who have inspired me. I listened to Barbra, Celine, Judy, Shania, and Avril when I was younger, but these days I like the sounds of Florence and the Machine, Joni Mitchell, and Carole King.

I am a proud member of SAG-AFTRA, ACTRA, AEA, CAEA, and Ring of Keys, a group that advocates for the rights of queer women, transgender people, and gender non-conforming artists in the musical theatre industry.
