‘House of the Dragon’: Who is Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen? Emma D’Arcy, Milly Alcock depict different eras of Realm’s Delight

There are just a few days left until the premiere of the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series ‘House of the Dragon,’ and fans have already begun filling social media with posts expressing how enthusiastic they are for the series. The HBO series begins over 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” and its primary focus is on House Targaryen and the powerful country they rule over. The Targaryen dynasty controlled Westeros for three centuries and experienced many highs and lows throughout that time. But when King Viserys I Targaryen made the decision to select a new successor to the Iron Throne, a lot of things changed, and a civil war broke out, which ultimately led to the downfall of the Targaryen house.

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, daughter of King Viserys I Targaryen and a dragon-rider who aspires to be the first queen regnant of the Seven Kingdoms, will be one of the many characters that the show will introduce that we have only heard of during ‘Game of Thrones.’ The show will also introduce a lot of other characters that we have only heard of during ‘Game of Thrones.’ Her life was full of difficulties, and when she was just eight years old, it was declared that she would be the heir to the throne. As a result, she spent her childhood preparing herself to one day rule Westeros as queen. On the other hand, males will not permit a woman to sit on a throne, and this is precisely what happened with her as well. She is one of the most interesting characters in George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ books, and she shared certain characteristics with Daenerys as well.

Now that we know who she was, let’s have a look at how she managed to ascend to the thrones of power.

Who is Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen?

Rhaenyra, who was born in the year 97 AC, was the only child that King Viserys I and Lady Aemma of House Arryn were able to raise to adulthood. Her two brothers both passed away when they were still very young, so she never got to know them. At the age of seven, Rhaenyra earned the title of “dragon-rider,” and she gave the baby dragon the name Syrax. During this time, she began serving at various events when she was just 8 years old and took on the role of cupbearer for her father. In the year 105 AC, Rhaenyra’s mother passed away as she was in the process of giving birth to Rhaenyra’s second brother, who also passed away the following day. After both of them passed away, King Viserys I made the decision to name his firstborn child Rhaenyra as the heir to the throne and informed everyone that Rhaenyra will be in charge of the country after he is gone.

Even though King Viserys’ will also confirmed that Rhaenyra would be named the future leader of the house following his death, many people did not take that seriously despite the fact that it was written in the will. Rhaenyra’s half-brother, Queen Alicent Hightower’s son Aegon II, was crowned as the new king of the Seven Kingdoms by Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, in defiance of everything that was written in the will. Rhaenyra’s half-brother is also the son of Queen Alicent Hightower. As a result of the decision to appoint Aegon as the new leader of the House Targaryen, there was a great deal of strife within the family, which led to the outbreak of the Targaryen civil war, also known as the Dance of the Dragons. This marked the beginning of the end for the House Targaryen.

Princess Rhaenyra, who was in the process of giving birth to her sixth child and was on Dragonstone at the time, was protected from the news of King Viserys’s death by a certain portion of the realm. Before Aegon II was crowned king, her followers were either imprisoned or put to death before the ceremony. As soon as Rhaenyra heard the news, she became enraged and proceeded into early labor. She ultimately gave birth to a daughter named Visenya who was malformed and died shortly after delivery. Rhaenyra, on the other hand, didn’t waste any time in organizing her own coronation, and she was eventually named the next Queen of Westeros. As soon as the word of her coronation reached King’s Landing, they made her an offer that, if she surrendered her claims, would let her and her successors to continue to rule Dragonstone even after she had abdicated her throne. However, Rhaenyra disobeyed, which led to the outbreak of war.

Who are Emma D’Arcy and Milly Alcock? Meet the actors playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen

On the episode, Rhaenyra will appear in two different guises, played by two separate actors, and we will get to see both of these incarnations. Milly Alcock will play the younger form of Princess Rhaenyra, and the exceptionally brilliant Emma D’Arcy will play the elder version of the aforementioned character. Both versions of Princess Rhaenyra will appear in the film.

Milly Alcock

Milly Alcock is an Australian actress who was born on April 11, 2000. She kicked off her television career in 2014 with a cameo performance in the episode “Wonderland.” On the other side, she is known for her appearances in television commercials for companies such as NBN, Cadbury, KFC, and Woolworths. The young actor has only been in one feature film to this far, but the most of his work has been on television shows. Her work in series such as “A Place to Call Home,” “Fighting Season,” “The Gloaming,” and “Reckoning” garnered a great deal of acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Nevertheless, it was the 2019 production “Upright” that brought her to the attention of the general public in Australia, and she was awarded by the Casting Guild of Australia for her work in the show.

As an actor, Alcock will make his debut in the American television series ‘House of the Dragon.’

Emma D’Arcy

Before making her debut on television or in movies, the gifted British actress debuted in a number of stage performances during the early stages of her playing career. Alongside Toni Collette, D’Arcy kicked off her career in television in 2018, when she was cast in the main role of the Netflix series “Wanderlust.” The year 2020 turned out to be a major one for the actress, as she was seen playing important roles in several high-budget television dramas, including “Hanna” and “Truth Seekers,” as well as a feature picture titled “Misbehavior.”

There is little question that “House of the Dragon” will be her most significant role to date, and she has a great deal of anticipation and hopes for it. D’Arcy made this observation regarding actress character Rhaenyra during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. She was discussing Rhaenyra and how she challenges “the borders of womanhood.” She went on to say that “he is a person who feels at odds with the way that she is read by the world” — even this moniker of the Realm’s Delight, which implies passivity and being an object of people’s ogling. She exerts a great deal of pressure on relationships, frequently to the point where they are unable to proceed, and then she satisfies the prophecy once more.

On the big screen, we can’t wait to see what Alcock and D’Arcy do with the role of Princess Rhaenyra.

The premiere of ‘House of the Dragon’ will take place on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, August 21, at 9 o’clock pm Eastern Standard Time.
