It is very uncommon for routines to span up to eight minutes and transition across two or three conventional burlesque songs. This breaks the standard rule that performances at other festivals and significant events are limited to four minutes.
” Lou Lou told 21st Century Burlesque Magazine. “I tied the knot, my toddler started sleeping in her own room, and I received the coveted title of ‘Queen of Burlesque’ at the New Orleans Burlesque Festival!
“It almost seems unreal, but I am extremely honored to bear this position,” she said. The opportunity to compete beside such illustrious company was truly humbling. Every single one of the ladies really brought it.”
“Just going on that stage required such a high level of talent that it was hard not to get lost in the anxiety spiral of measuring up,” says Lou Lou. “It was difficult not to get trapped in the anxiety spiral of measuring up.” “At the end of the day, I received fantastic advice from my husband and friends, which was basically get the hell out of your head and just have fun, which is exactly what I did,” she said. “I’m happy to report that I did.”
In contrast to the more delicate and girly outfits that are typically worn in traditional competitions, Lou Lou wore a black widow costume. “I was informed that I am the first Indigenous woman to carry the title, which is more meaningful to me on a personal level, and I am very appreciative of that,” she said. “I am the first Canadian to hold the title, which I am extremely appreciative of.”
When I first began out as a performer in 2005, there was just a small percentage of indigenous women working in our business. It warms my heart to know that this is shifting, and that after much emotional labor and perseverance, we are able to start discussing and deconstructing issues related to the decolonization of indigenous sexuality. The Costume Of La Lou la Duchesse de Rière
Christina Manuge, the brilliant burlesque costumier behind Manuge et Toi, was the one responsible for creating the bright and meticulously crafted spider costume. She discussed the creative process with 21st Century Burlesque and how it led to the creation of the costume that was worn on stage.
“Lou Lou surprised me completely by approaching me with this Spideress idea!
” says Christina. “She requested that the corset have an over-the-bust cut, accentuated hips, and a full-bodied mermaid skirt.” Because I am OBSESSED with a tailored form, the focus of this project organically evolved into one that is mostly concerned with the creation of something remarkable and architectural. Her spider motif served as the inspiration for the look, and when I showed her the final design sketches I had created, she said that they were the most stunning thing she had ever observed.
“To complete the outfit, she commissioned Hana Trudeau to build a cloak for her and Adora Belle to create pasties and gloves for her. The bra was handmade by Lou Lou, and she added all of the rhinestones herself. Dress, corset, bustle or overskirt, and panty are the components that make up the Manuge et Toi set.
What Hapend In Burlesque With La Lou la Duchesse de Rière
Due to its position as the highest layer, the bustle is the first component to be removed. This piece is fully formed and quilted, and it features a spiderweb pattern and color scheme that are complementary to those of the corset. Snaps secure a full “spider” as well as its “legs” to the item in its entirety. This is done not so that she may remove those legs on stage, but rather so that she can pack the spider away more easily by flattening it out. The legs are boned all the way through, which means they will never require reshaping and will always maintain those beautiful bends! ”
“In addition, the entire corset is quilted, which is something that I decided to include not only as a decorative accent, but also to assist in helping to strengthen my shaping. This provided me with a more stable foundation around which to build the spider web design. This was constructed entirely of hand-made silk bias tape and edge-stitched into position before being put to the base in a piecemeal fashion.
” Christina continues. “Each and every one of the fourteen legs was constructed, boned, and fashioned to be precisely the same as the one that came before it. They are fastened to a hoop stack that is made to allow Lou to detach the hoops individually for the sake of transportation and storage.
“The legs are permanently attached to the body, but they fold down quite flat in order to save space while packing.” As she moves, the hoop stack spins around her in a circular motion. The prototype of that stack had an awful lot of bounce to it, which is why it is critical that you constantly set aside some time to test new ideas. I was able to fix the problem by making a few adjustments to my build, and now we have a garment that I believe is very fascinating, to go along with Lou Lou’s fantastic style of movement and performance.

In a recent interview, Lou Lou La Duchesse revealed that she is currently based in the city of Toronto and that she is of mixed Ojibwe and other ethnicities. It is possible that the pair adheres to Christian religious views; however, this information has not been verified by them.
