Piastri, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, to Italian and Australian parents, began competing in national remote-control car races before starting his karting career in 2011.
After turning pro and participating in a number of Australian races and championships in 2014, Piastri started racing for Ricky Flynn Motorsport in European and international CIK-FIA-sanctioned karting championships the following year. In 2016, he relocated to the United Kingdom to advance his racing career after placing sixth in Bahrain at the 2016 World Championship.

Early in 2016, Piastri secured his first significant sponsorship from his father’s HP Tuners, which helped support his racing career. Piastri’s switch to the defending team champions R-ace GP for the 2019 season was announced in December 2018.
At Silverstone, he won the series for the first time. A day later, he repeated the feat with a second victory there. After winning at Spa-Francorchamps in July, he became the first driver to win three races in 2019 and was declared the winner after finishing first and fourth at the championship race at Yas Marina.

Piastri participated in the post-season test in October 2019 with Prema Racing, the current FIA Formula 3 team champions.
Along with Frederik Vesti and Logan Sargeant, Piastri was signed by the Italian team in January 2020 to compete in the upcoming season.
For his first race at the Red Bull Ring, Piastri lined up third on the starting grid. Sebastián Fernández, the pole-sitter, and he crashed at the first corner, but he sustained no injuries and went on to win.  Before making his first retirement of the season at the following Silverstone sprint race due to a stuck-open DRS, Piastri finished in second place three times in a row at the two Hungaroring races and the first Silverstone feature race.After struggling with reliability issues in qualifying, teammate Sargeant passed Piastri for the championship lead at the second Silverstone feature race. Prior to the end of the first lap in the sprint race in Barcelona, Piastri had passed a number of other vehicles from his starting position of sixth. He maintained his advantage to claim his second triumph. After placing fifth in the subsequent Spa-Francorchamps feature race, Piastri recaptured the championship lead, but he lost it again after being fined for an illegal overtake in the sprint race, which Sargeant won.
Piastri started the main event in 15th after receiving a penalty at Monza for obstructing Jake Hughes during qualifying.
By the finish line, he had moved up to third place and had reclaimed the championship lead thanks to Sargeant being involved in an accident. Clément Novalak’s collision with Piastri caused him to withdraw from the sprint race, but he was also given a five-place grid penalty for the following race for pushing David Beckmann off the track earlier in the race. After his teammates collided, Piastri continued to hold the championship lead despite retiring.
Piastri qualified 16th for the last feature race at the Mugello Circuit, but despite finishing 11th, he was unable to collect any points. Both drivers entered the final race locked on 160 points after title challenger Sargeant finished sixth. Six positions in front of Piastri at the start of the sprint race, Sargeant was eliminated following a crash on the opening circuit. Piastri’s lone remaining title contender, Théo Pourchaire, was unable to bridge the points difference and Piastri finished seventh to claim the championship title, three points ahead of Pourchaire and four ahead of Sargeant.

Piastri stated in December 2020 that he would continue with Prema into Formula 2, taking over for Mick Schumacher who was leaving, and team up with fellow member of the Ferrari Driver Academy Robert Shwartzman for the 2021 season.
In his first race, Piastri came in fifth place. In the second race, Piastri, a fellow Alpine youngster who started from sixth place, gained positions before passing Zhou Guanyu on the final lap to grab the lead and win his first Formula 2 race. Piastri started the main race in ninth place but overtook many vehicles on lap 13 of 32 to win the lead. After colliding with Dan Ticktum and spinning with two laps left, he was ultimately forced to retire. Following Zhou in the championship standings, Piastri finished the Monaco round in second place on two separate occasions.
Piastri finished second in the feature race despite having to withdraw from Baku’s opening sprint event due to an accident on the opening lap. After placing sixth in the opening sprint race at Silverstone, he took the pole position and the championship lead. He had a five-point advantage over Zhou in the championship standings at the end of the fourth round.Piastri improved his championship lead with another pole position and victory at Sochi after taking his maiden feature win in the series at Monza, which featured a duel with Zhou on lap 25. When Piastri won Jeddah’s second sprint race and was in the lead when the feature race was called off, he became the second driver that season, after Jüri Vips, to win two events on the same weekend. The Australian driver became the third to win the championship in their first season when he finished on the podium in race one at Yas Marina. With his fourth consecutive victory in the main race to top off his campaign, Piastri finished the year with six victories, more than any other driver did that year.
Piastri became the first driver to win the GP2/F2 championship in their first season, joining the esteemed company of Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Hülkenberg, Charles Leclerc, and George Russell. With his 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup victory, he also became the first driver to win three straight F1 feeder series titles and the fifth driver overall, after Hamilton, Hülkenberg, Leclerc, and Russell, to win the GP3/F3 and GP2/F2 championships.
In January 2020, Formula One Piastri joined the Renault Sport Academy.
After winning the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020, he drove the Renault R.S.18 at Bahrain International Circuit for his maiden Formula One test in October with the Renault F1 Team, alongside fellow academy drivers Christian Lundgaard and Zhou Guanyu.
In 2021, he continued to be a member of the Alpine Academy, which had undergone a rebranding, and participated in the post-season young drivers’ test at Yas Marina Circuit in the Alpine A521.

Alpine made the announcement the next day that Piastri will take over for Alonso in 2023, however there were no words from Piastri in the press statement. Shortly after, Piastri replied to Alpine’s announcement on Twitter, rejecting it and announcing that he would not be driving for them in 2023 because he had not signed a deal with the club. Following up, Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer criticized Piastri’s behavior and “integrity as a human being,” asserting that he expected devotion from the former academy driver and threatening to file a lawsuit over the contract issues. To ascertain whether Piastri was obligated to Alpine or had free agency to switch teams for 2023, a hearing before the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board began on August 29, 2022. Alpine might have required Piastri to fulfill his contract and compete for them in 2023 if they had won their case before the board, or they could have sought payment for Piastri’s services from any other interested teams. Nevertheless, the CRB rejected Alpine, and Piastri’s transfer to McLaren was subsequently approved. The date Piastri officially signed his contract with McLaren, which was the 4 July 2022—one day after the 2022 British Grand Prix—was also disclosed by the CRB in its final ruling. This deal initially only guaranteed Piastri with a reserve slot for 2023 with an upgrade to a race seat pending the Woking team’s ability to reach an agreement with Daniel Ricciardo regarding a contract termination, which was ultimately reached ahead to the 2022 Belgian Grand Prix.He says that “nothing jumps to mind” as a present for his 21st birthday as he prepares for his debut Formula 1® Heineken® Australian Grand Prix in 2022 as the backup driver for the BWT Alpine F1 team.
