Rajkummar Rao was originally given the name Raj Kumar Yadav when he was born on August 31st, 1984 in the city of Prem Nagar in the Indian state of Haryana. Within his extended family, he had two older siblings and three cousins among his relations. His father, Satya Prakash Yadav, worked for the government in the Haryana revenue department, and his mother, Kamlesh Yadav, was a homemaker. Both of his parents were named Yadav.

After completing his studies at the Film and Television Institute of India, Rajkummar made the decision to pursue a career in acting in the city of Mumbai. He spent the better part of a year traveling to different production studios and meeting with casting directors.
He made his acting debut in the film Love Sex Aur Dhokha in the year 2010, after responding to an advertisement posted by casting director “Dibakar Banerjee,” who was looking for new talent (LSD). As compensation for his efforts on the film LSD, he received $11,000.
