RBX: Career
Together with his cousins Snoop Dogg and Daz Dillinger, RBX joined Death Row Records in 1992. Collins, a former retail manager and college student, refused to sign blank contracts like his Death Row contemporaries. It would be a brief but memorable time for him at the label.
Having appeared in forceful cameos on The Chronic and Doggystyle in 1992 and 1993, respectively, RBX departed the label in 1994 and signed with Premeditated Records, a less well-known label. His debut solo album, The RBX Files, was produced by Greg “Gregski” Royal, a former member of the Chronic production team.
The album eschewed the well-liked West coast G-Funk aesthetic in favor of a “gritty, dungeon-like” New York sound. X attacked Death Row, Suge Knight, Dre, and others in the song “A.W.O.L.,” drawing comparisons between their shady business tactics and those of Ruthless Records, Jerry Heller, and Eazy-E. He discussed an argument he had with Suge Knight about food in which Knight brandished a gun in a YouTube interview with VladTV.
RBX visited Dr. Dre at his house in 1996 and expressed regret for his harsh remarks on records and in magazines. Dre’s new Aftermath label then quickly signed RBX. He appeared on the Dr. Dre Presents… The Aftermath compilation in 1996 on the solo single “Blunt Time” and the group tune “East Coast/West Coast Killaz” with KRS-One, B-Real, Scarface, and Nas.
RBX went solo once more and released his follow-up album No Mercy, No Remorse on an independent label in 1999 after becoming lost in the catastrophic reorganization of Aftermath in 1998. In 2000, he returned with Aftermath for a cameo appearance on Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP.
On his comeback album “XHibernator,” RBX started working with Los Angeles producers Sccit & Siavash The Grouch in 2022. Spice-1, MC Eiht, Fatlip, Project Pat, Eligh, Cold 187um, Krayzie Bone, Butch Cassidy (singer), Smoov-E, and other artists contribute to the track. On April 20, 2022, RBX helped Fatlip with the release of “Wake Up,” a single from Fatlip’s upcoming album “Torpor,” which was created by Sccit & Siavash The Grouch. The music video for the tune was based on the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles.
