Anita received her nursing degree from West Texas State University, where she studied nursing. She has been the driving force behind a number of projects that are concerned with health, such as the Anita Thigpen Perry Endowment at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. This endowment supports research on nutrition, cardiovascular disease, early childhood development, and health education.  She was a part of the team that organized and hosted the Texas Conference for Women.
